Satheesan's 20-member cabinet takes an oath—Kerala's new political chapter begins
Kerala Cabinet oath ceremony: Satheesan names 20 ministers as Kerala's new cabinet is sworn in on May 18, marking a new political era.
There is anticipation of an important political change in Kerala as the chief minister-designate, V. D. Satheesan, has revealed his team of 20 ministers before the swearing-in ceremony that has been planned for May 18 at the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. There are high hopes among the people as the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is about to come back to power after many years under the rule of the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
There is an overwhelming enthusiasm prevailing all across the state as everyone eagerly awaits what will happen next regarding the formation of a new cabinet. The swearing-in ceremony that is going to be held at Central Stadium will attract many important personalities from the Congress Party, such as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
This cabinet is made up of both veteran politicians as well as newcomers to politics. Out of a total of 21 members in the ministry, including the chief minister, fourteen members are new ministers. Commentators opine that this is a clear indication of the attempt by the leadership of the United Democratic Front (UDF) to project itself as having a fresh and dynamic team of ministers able to deal with the challenges faced by Kerala at present.
One of the alliance partners of the United Democratic Front (UDF), the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), enjoys good representation among the members of the cabinet formed. Many leaders of this political outfit were allocated important ministries in the Cabinet, indicating its continued relevance on the political front. However, the allocation of ministries also led to much debate within the ranks of the alliance. It was reported that the leadership of the UDF, along with many members and workers, had raised concerns about regional representation.
Behind closed doors, there had been tough negotiations that preceded the release of the list of Cabinet members. The politics of coalition building in Kerala usually require a careful balancing act among various groups, communities, and districts, which was the case even in the present instance, where other smaller parties within the UDF were clamoring for inclusion.
For V.D. Satheesan, this represents his finest hour as a politician. He earned himself a reputation for his sharp tongue and criticism of the erstwhile LDF government in his capacity as the leader of the opposition. With Satheesan now appointed as Chief Minister, his rise to power is seen as an attempt by the Congress leadership to inject new life into Kerala politics.
Preparations for the swearing-in of the government have been completed in the last phase in Thiruvananthapuram. The security measures have been strengthened, and it is expected that large numbers of supporters will throng the venue. Arrangements have also been made for traffic control and public viewing of the event.
Now, it is time for the new government to show its mettle by delivering results. Unemployment, rising prices of basic necessities, development of infrastructure, and efficient handling of finances may become key issues for the new government to concentrate on. The expectations of the people from the new government are very high.
As the state of Kerala gears up to welcome this new era in politics, the May 18 swearing-in ceremony assumes significance for many reasons. This ceremony heralds the arrival of an important challenge for the new Congress-led UDF government to demonstrate its performance and competence.
