Manipur Shutdown Enters Fifth Day Amid Anger Over Children’s Deaths
Manipur bandh enters Day 5 amid protests over children killed in Bishnupur blast. Meira Paibis and civil groups demand immediate arrests as life remains paralyzed across Imphal Valley districts.
A five-day shutdown has been enforced in the entire state of Manipur, bringing all activities almost to a standstill in the valley districts due to widespread outrage at the death of two children from an explosion, which occurred a week back. The "bandh," which started on April 19th, is being spearheaded by the Meira Paibis—otherwise known as torchbearers—along with some other social outfits.
This “bandh” is indicative of the intense feeling of frustration within the community and the people’s demand for justice in relation to the unfortunate event.
Tragedy Behind The Mass Protests Across The State
This is because of the tragic occurrence of an explosion on April 7 in Bishnupur, which led to the death of a five-year-old boy and a baby girl who was only five months old. This has been the reason for intense grief and outrage amongst the people in the entire state, especially in the valleys.
Amongst all the other demands put forward by the protestors, they have strongly demanded that the perpetrators be arrested. Some protestors have further associated the attack with security issues and alleged militant activities in the adjoining hill areas.
Life Interrupted and Protesters Become Agitated
With the imposition of the bandh, the daily life of citizens has been disrupted in major valleys, such as the Imphal East and Imphal West regions, where there is an absence of people on the road, closed shops, and no transportation service. Citizens are now experiencing problems in purchasing necessary items, causing economic activities to slow down. While the protests began in a peaceful manner, things have worsened to an extent where there have been conflicts between the protesting crowd and security personnel in specific regions.
Police Raise Alarm Over Hijack by ‘Anti-Social Elements’ of Protesters
The Manipur Police has issued an alarm that some people are trying to hijack the protests and engage in disruptive behavior. As per authorities, some people who claim themselves to be protestors indulge in acts of violence, such as throwing stones and using crude weapons.
It is alleged by police sources that organizers use petrol bombs and catapults loaded with iron balls while clashing with security personnel. Some participants also reportedly consumed alcohol or drugs during demonstrations.
It is said that the security forces maintain calm even after being provoked so as not to worsen the situation and cause civilian casualties. On the other hand, strict action will be taken against those who indulge in violent activities or damage public property.
Tightening Security Amid Continued Bandh
Due to the increasing tension, the security arrangements have been tightened in sensitive zones. The security forces have been boosted, and close watch is being kept on any unfolding scenario to maintain peace.
The organizers of the bandh have made it clear that it would go on until the 23rd of April. They have also threatened further protests in case of no justice.
A State on the Brink in Face of Rising Hostilities
This situation shows how fragile law and order are in Manipur, a state that is having trouble with its own people. Recent events have made locals even angrier and shown that they are even more afraid for their safety.
Civil organizations have called upon the state to ensure timely measures are taken to reassure the citizens and prevent any future incidents. In addition, citizens demand that the state ensure their future safety from such atrocities.
As the agitation persists in the state, Manipuri people find themselves stuck between grieving and protesting, awaiting an effective solution to their problems.
