West Bengal Assembly Dissolved Amid Political Standoff, Mamata Refuses to Quit

It is indeed an unprecedented situation in West Bengal, as the governor, R.N. Ravi, has declared the dissolution of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly despite the incumbent chief minister, Mamata Banerjee, refusing to resign from office following the loss of her party in the 2026 Assembly election.

The dissolutions came into force on May 7, 2026, pursuant to clause 174(2)(b) of the Constitution of India. Based on available reports, the order was promulgated following the expiration of the tenure of five years of the assembly and indications in the election outcomes of a dramatic change in political dynamics in the state.

The latest electoral contest has been unprecedentedly significant for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which will soon establish its first ever government in West Bengal following its decisive victory. It brings to an end more than a decade of absolute political control by All India Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee.

On the other hand, Mamata Banerjee categorically refused to accept the verdict of the electoral contest, accusing the process of massive irregularities and manipulations of the mandate of the electorate. Reportedly, she even called the results “looted.” She has also indicated her willingness to seek judicial intervention against the results.

According to experts in politics, once the Assembly tenure expires and a fresh majority arises, it becomes the constitutional right of the governor to start the transfer process and ask the ruling majority to take office. With the Assembly being dissolved, it seems certain that it is time for the BJP legislative party to select their leader and stake their claim.

At present, tensions are running high in some parts of the state due to election violence and claims by both sides. The security forces are watching developments with interest.

The next few days are going to be very important as West Bengal gears up for a new era in politics.
