Vijay’s Rise Redefines Tamil Nadu Politics as Star-Turned Leader Takes Oath as Chief Minister

The political landscape of Tamil Nadu was witnessing one of its most historic moments when film actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay took an oath as the new chief minister of the state, thus bringing about a political revolution after years of domination by the Dravidian giants such as DMK and AIADMK. His swearing-in ceremony in Chennai was hailed as both a political event and a cultural one, with huge turnouts witnessed for the occasion.

As the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which bagged a massive 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, he became a major revelation of the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results announced on May 19, 2026. With a shortfall of seats to make a majority, however, the political newcomer managed to forge alliances that enabled him to cobble together a government. Media reports indicate he succeeded in winning support from members of Congress, left parties, the VCK, and the IUML.

According to political observers, the success of Vijay can be characterized as a rewrite of Tamil Nadu’s “political grammar.” Since 1967, Tamil Nadu has generally been dominated by DMK and AIADMK in alternating phases of power. The success of Vijay is thus an indication of the increasing attraction of political outsiders, celebrity politics, and youth politics.

The oath-taking ceremony was conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which saw large gatherings of people. Alongside Vijay, there was a small cabinet of nine members. A number of political leaders and personalities also attended the event.

The newly elected Chief Minister pledged in his maiden speech as head of the state that his era will be marked by “secular governance," “social justice," empowering youth, and administration that would put the interest of the common man before anything else. He did not delay in making important governance decisions pertaining to the safety of women, the drug ban, and other social issues.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Vijay and pledged full support for development in Tamil Nadu, while outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin also wished him.

The transition of Vijay from an ace movie star to the chief minister is not complete without taking up his governance responsibilities, managing the alliance, and delivering on his promise to grow the economy of Tamil Nadu amidst high expectations of its citizens.

Tamil Nadu has now ushered in a new political era altogether—an era that does not belong to old equations but has come through a new mandate and a new face.
