Bangladesh is boiling again: Here's why it matters for India

Since the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi late Thursday, Bangladesh has been rocked by violent protests. People are worried that there will be more unrest before the country's national elections.

Masked attackers shot Hadi in the head last Friday while he was campaigning for election in Dhaka. He was a student leader during last year's uprising that overthrew the Sheikh Hasina government. He was first treated at a hospital nearby, but then he was moved to Singapore, where he died after being on life support for six days.

Late Thursday, videos on social media showed mobs destroying the offices of the country's two biggest newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, in Dhaka. The Daily Star office was attacked again on Friday. Both news organizations stopped printing their Friday editions.

The protests had slogans that made people feel strongly about Hadi. According to a report from the news agency Reuters, several areas stayed tense late into Thursday night. More security forces were sent in to stop more violence.

Muhammad Yunus, the interim leader of Bangladesh, said of Hadi's death, "His passing represents an irreplaceable loss to the nation's political and democratic sphere." Yunus made sure that the investigation into Hadi's death was open and told people to stay calm.
