Artemis II mission achievements and stunning imagery
Artemis II crew captures stunning images of Earth at night from deep space, revealing glowing cities that shine like stars across the darkness.
The NASA mission, Artemis II, is currently snapping stunning pictures of the Moon and Earth, getting millions of likes across social media platforms. Four astronauts are traveling farther away from Earth than any person since 1972, using 32 cameras on the Orion capsule, which include handheld Nikon cameras, GoPros, and smartphones. Among the stunning photographs is one called "Hello, World," which shows the Earth eclipsed by the sun with auroras. The astronauts took another incredible photograph of the Orientalis basin of the Moon, which they had seen for the first time in human history.
Earth's image capture by Artemis II:
Science or Entertainment?
Even though NASA focuses on scientific significance, many people doubt its usefulness. According to Chris Lintott, who is a professor at Oxford University, the pictures represent artistic significance but not scientific. This is because numerous robots have mapped the moon's far side very precisely. These include India's Chandrayaan-3 and China's Chang'e-6. In response, NASA claims that human eyes can recognize colors and textures that robots may ignore. However, it is evident that all the entertainment aims for public appeal and political gains.

The Political Backdrop of the Images
In addition to its exploratory aspect, the Artemis II mission is also fraught with politics. Indeed, America and China are in an intense space race to be the first to send people back to the moon. Being able to accomplish this mission would provide the Americans with a definite strategic edge. Furthermore, NASA must answer to Trump’s government, which has slashed funding from numerous scientific institutions, obliging NASA to prove its importance. In addition, commercial companies such as SpaceX continue to set higher standards for the industry. NASA wants the Artemis II mission to deliver an image to rival the famous “Earthrise” picture taken in 1968.
