Karnataka DGP Ramachandra Rao has been suspended after an alleged obscene video went viral on social media, triggering a major political and administrative controversy. Read full details, reactions, and official action taken by the state government
Bengaluru: K. Ramachandra Rao, the Karnataka Director General of Police (Civil Rights Enforcement), has been suspended after several videos that allegedly show him in a compromising position with women went viral on social media on Monday.
The clips that haven't been checked out showed him with the women in what looked like his office. There were also some shady audio clips that showed Rao talking to women.
Rao's suspension order said that he "acted in an obscene manner that is unbecoming of a government servant and also embarrassed the government."
The official order said that the state government is sure that Rao's behavior breaks the rules.
It went on to say, "The State Government is prima facie satisfied that it is necessary to place Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao, Director General of Police, Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement, under suspension with immediate effect, pending inquiry."
The order says that Rao can't leave the headquarters "under any circumstances" without the state government's written permission while he is suspended.
K Ramachandra Rao Denies Claims
K Ramachandra Rao, on the other hand, has denied the claims and called them "false and made up."
As the videos spread quickly on Monday, he also rushed to meet Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara at his home, but the meeting never happened.
"I'm shocked. It's all made up and not true. Everything in the video is a lie. "I don't know anything about it," he told reporters outside Parameshwara's house.
"I'm also thinking about how, when, and who did it. Anything can happen in this day and age. He said, "I don't know anything about it."
When asked if those are old videos, Rao, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the 1993 batch, said, "Old means eight years ago when I was in Belagavi."
Siddaramaiah on K Ramachandra Rao's Alleged Clips
Siddaramaiah, the Chief Minister of Karnataka, said on Monday that action would be taken if the official was found guilty.
"I learned about it in the morning. We will take disciplinary action against him. He said, "No one is above the law, no matter how high up the police officer is."
S. Suresh Kumar, a senior BJP MLA and former minister, called it "a disgraceful act" and "an inexcusable crime."
"Rao has done something that has hurt the reputation of the whole police department. Kumar said, "This senior officer's actions, in uniform and in his own office, have made people suspicious and doubtful of the police department itself."
K Ramachandra Rao's Bad History
There were earlier claims that K Ramachandra Rao helped his stepdaughter, actress Ranya Rao, who was arrested last year for bringing gold into the country illegally.
People said that he helped her avoid customs and police checks by using official protocol and police escorts.
After the uproar, Rao, who was the managing director and chairman of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation, was forced to take a leave of absence in March.
After an investigation, the state government gave him his job back.
He was named DGP for the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement in August.
