Rajpal Yadav in Tihar Jail: What Is the ₹9-Crore Cheque Bounce Case?

Actor Rajpal Yadav gave himself up at Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, after the Delhi High Court turned down his last-minute request for more time in a long-running case about bouncing checks and defaulting on loans.

The court gave him a six-month sentence because he kept breaking its rules. The case goes back to 2010 and is about unpaid debts that allegedly grew to nearly Rs 9 crore after his production company, Ata Pata Laapata, failed.

What started out as a business problem more than ten years ago turned into a long legal battle that ended with Rajpal Yadav going to jail, even though there were many chances to settle.

What Was the Beginning?

PTI says that the legal problems began in 2010, when Rajpal Yadav borrowed about Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to pay for his first movie as a director, Ata Pata Laapata. The movie did poorly at the box office, which cost a lot of money.

Rajpal Yadav had trouble paying back the loan because the project didn't make much money. The amount owed grew to almost Rs 9 crore over time because of interest, late payments, and penalties.

Rajpal Yadav wrote several checks to the lender to pay off his debts. However, these checks were not honored, which led to criminal charges under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

A magisterial court found Rajpal Yadav and his wife guilty of several cases of bouncing checks in April 2018 and sentenced him to six months in prison. In 2019, a sessions court upheld this conviction, which led to more appeals to the Delhi High Court.

Years of extensions and broken promises

Most of the time, loan defaults are seen as civil disputes, but the Delhi High Court was very upset that Rajpal Yadav kept breaking his promises to the court.

He was given several extra months to pay the amount back in installments over the course of several years. The court said that even though he made partial payments and promised to do so many times, he always failed to follow the agreed-upon schedules.

The court said that Rajpal Yadav had to pay Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases against him. It also told the Registrar General to give the complainant the money that had already been deposited.

Two demand drafts of Rs 75 lakh were deposited in October 2025. The court did say, though, that almost Rs 9 crore was still owed.

The High Court put Rajpal Yadav's conviction on hold in June 2024, but only if he took "sincere and genuine measures" to try to reach a peaceful settlement. The court later decided that these efforts had not been successful.

The High Court tells Rajpal Yadav to give up

The Delhi High Court told Rajpal Yadav to turn himself in to jail authorities by 4 p.m. on February 4, 2026. The court said that his behavior was bad because he kept breaking promises.

When Rajpal Yadav didn't turn himself in on time, his senior lawyer made a "mercy plea," saying that he had been trying to get money and had gotten to Delhi by 5 pm.

The court turned down the request and wrote down that it "strongly disapproved." Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said, "This Court cannot be expected to show or create special circumstances for any person merely because such a person belongs to a particular background or industry.. Sometimes leniency is needed, but it can't go on forever, especially if the person keeps breaking the rules.

It said that taking back the order to surrender would send the wrong message and refused to give any more help.

Rajpal Yadav showed up in person for the court proceedings on February 5, 2026. His lawyer told the court that he was ready to send in a demand draft for Rs 25 lakh and follow a new payment schedule.

The judge refused to recall the surrender order, even though the offer was made. He stressed that compassion must be balanced with discipline and that the courts could not make "special circumstances" for people in the film industry.

Later that day, Rajpal Yadav gave himself up at Tihar Jail and started his six-month sentence. The prison officials said that they followed all the rules.

What Did Rajpal Yadav Say After Giving Up?

Rajpal Yadav had said before to Bollywood Hungama that he felt helpless, saying, "What to do?" I can't see any other way out because I don't have the money to pay back.

He also said that he hadn't gotten much help from his coworkers and that "everyone is on their own" in the business.

Celebrities' Responses

After Rajpal Yadav gave up, many people in the film industry publicly showed their support.

Actor Sonu Sood said he would give Rajpal Yadav a part and a signing bonus. He wrote on X, "Rajpal Yadav is a talented actor who has done great work for our industry for years." Life can be unfair sometimes, not because of talent, but because timing can be tough. He will be in my movie, and I think this is the time for all of us—producers, directors, and coworkers—to stand together.

He went on to say, "A small signing amount that can be changed based on future work is not charity; it's dignity." This is how we show that we are more than just a business when one of our own is going through a tough time.

Anees Bazmee, a filmmaker, told NDTV, "I've known Rajpal Yadav for 20 to 25 years..." He never meant to hurt anyone... Not many people in the movie business are good at filling out forms... He is still working and slowly making money, but paying such a large amount all at once is hard for him."

He also said, "We are one family, one industry." We should help him as much as we can and try to get him out of this tough spot.

Actor Gurmeet Choudhary wrote on X, "It breaks my heart to see a senior, very talented artist like Rajpal Yadav ji going through such a painful time..." He needs us today.

He went on to say, "Our industry is like a family." And family never leaves its own.

Rajpal Yadav's last two movies were Baby John and Interrogation. He will next be seen in Akshay Kumar's horror-comedy Bhoot Bangla, which comes out on April 10.
